Corten steel garden edging FAQs
Is corten steel environmentally friendly?
The natural weathering of corten steel means it doesn’t need a treatment to protect against corrosion like some other metals, making this type of garden edging environmentally friendly.
Once it is in place, you simply allow it to weather, and it will take care of itself without harming the environment.
How long does it take for corten steel to rust?
The time it takes for corten steel to rust depends on its positioning and the conditions it is exposed to. Typically, the process of corten steel rusting looks something like this:
1. Freshly manufactured corten steel starts with an oily residue.
2. As weathering starts, the oily residue breaks down.
3. Over the next 3-6 months, the steel develops a ‘run-off’. This is typically the colour of rust.
4. The corten steel will self-seal itself during the final stages of the weathering process, ending with a relatively consistent rusted colour.
Is corten steel stronger than mild steel?
Both corten steel and mild steel are strong and durable; however, because corten steel is corrosion-resistant, it retains its strength without the need for painting or sealing. In comparison, mild steel is more flexible, making it ideal for shaped edging as it is more pliable.
Can corten garden edging be painted?
Corten steel is usually chosen for its naturally weathered look, but it can be painted. Some paint it to increase its longevity, especially if the steel is often exposed to saltwater, which can mean it corrodes faster.
Painted corten steel edging benefits from the natural properties of corten steel with some added protection.
How do you clean corten steel?
To help preserve the natural weathering of your corten steel edging, clean it with a dampened cloth. It’s best not to use an abrasive cleaner or a strong soap, as these could affect the surface coating.
How long does corten steel last?
Corten steel can last up to eight times longer than standard steel. This means that corten steel edging (UK) can last for decades. However, you should consider the environment as humidity, salt, soil acidity, and soil density can all affect its lifespan.
