Is your garden ready for a facelift this summer?

Although many people restart their gardens mid-late spring, it’s never too late to make a start on your garden. Early summer is an ideal time to start working in your garden for many reasons – the dry, warm weather encourages some outside time, allowing you to reconnect with nature providing physical and mental health benefits.

Restarting your garden in the summer also gives your new plants the best chance to grow and thrive. The longer days and warmer soil temperatures create the perfect conditions for growth, ensuring your plants have ample time to establish themselves before the harsh UK winters.

With most of your current flowers/plants already in full bloom, this time of year offers you a clear view of your current garden layout—a valuable asset that helps you understand your areas for improvement. With this knowledge, you can plan your garden makeover precisely, knowing where to dig, prune, or plant.

So, if you’re wondering what to do with your outdoor space but want to keep things trendy, our blog covers the top three landscaping trends for 2024, offering inspiration and practical tips for transforming your garden.

1. Eco friendly

Eco-friendly things are all the rage, and we think this trend should be here to stay! You can make these few small changes to start making your garden more eco-friendly:

Planting native species, such as primroses, golden shield ferns, and wood anemones, will help you attract wildlife to your garden and help the ecosystem thrive.

Section off an area to create a veggie patch to grow fruit, vegetables, and herbs. By growing your own, you reduce your use of plastic packaging and rely less on supermarkets.

2. Low maintenance/minamilist

Not everybody has time or energy for extensive gardening after a long day at work, but having a lovely garden to relax in is still possible.

To help save time, consider ditching or minimising your lawn to reduce the amount of grass that needs maintenance.

Replace grass areas with stone or decked areas; although these areas will require maintenance, they will be less demanding and easier to maintain than cutting your grass every two weeks.

Alternatively, one idea is to create large raised planter borders full of evergreen, low-maintenance plants to minimise the lawn. Then, a wide stone or mulch walkway between the lawn and the planters will help eliminate the need for a strimmer when cutting the grass.

3. “Goth gardening”

If you enjoy the aesthetic of dark hue colours and Halloween is your favourite holiday, goth gardening may just be for you.

To create a gothic garden, use a mix of dark foliage and plants to create a moody aesthetic; get creative and find some dark planters/pots in hues of deep purples and navy to accessorise the look.

Your summer garden awaits

Whether you enjoy the thought of a garden which needs less maintenance or are intrigued by the appeal of goth gardening, there is a trend to suit everyone’s unique preferences.

Take advantage of the warmer weather and give your garden a fresh look with this year’s trends—it may just be the boost you need for your physical and mental well-being!
